The top 5 things I did this year to keep my family organised

The top 5 things I did this year to keep my family organised

If you could use one word to sum up your year, what would you use?

For me, 2016 has been a year I would simply call 'hectic'!

With our home renovation, having to move out for 4 months, the huge process of moving back in, our continued work on home projects, my husband's long work hours, me working every spare second on moving my business forward, and big changes with the kids, it has been one hectic year for sure! However, although it may sound like it, I am definitely not complaining. Our renovation has been truly life-changing and I am appreciative every day of what we have accomplished. We are extremely blessed to live the life that we do. But I sure am ready for a break over Christmas!

I think everyone starts to feel this way as the year comes to a close, so it's a good time to reflect on the things that are working in your household... and those areas you want to improve on for next year. Here's a list of the top 5 things I did this year to keep my family organised, and the ones I want to improve on for 2017.

5 easy ways to organise your handbag

5 easy ways to organise your handbag

Is your handbag full of too much 'stuff'?

Can you never find what you're looking for in there?

Do you sometimes find yourself in a situation when you don't have what you need on hand? Your child's nose is running but you don't have any tissues. You're at a parking metre but have no change. You're running late but can't find your keys in your purse. The strap on your favourite dress just broke but you don't have a safety pin. You have to fill out a form or card on the spot but don't have a pen.

Can you relate?

What's stopping you from getting more organised?

What's stopping you from getting more organised?

As a blogger and professional organiser, I come across many different organising needs and struggles from people I talk to, meet with and hear from via my weekly newsletter. These needs and struggles include knowing where to start when it comes to getting more organised, having strategies to overcome the organising barriers and excuses, knowing how to prioritise and schedule tasks, or knowing the process for decluttering and setting up new organised systems. When you start looking in depth at these struggles and concerns, some related themes start to arise. To me, the most common ones are:

Time
Fear/feeling overwhelmed
Lack of knowledge
Procrastination
Perfectionism

Maybe you can immediately identify with or relate to one (or some) of these themes? Today I want you to think about what's truly holding you back from getting more organised. I'm giving you some strategies to try to overcome the barriers, but more than anything it comes down to a change of mindset. Anyone can get more organised when armed with the right tools, strategies and knowledge! I know you can too.

Imagine if you had all your important household information all in the one easy-to-access spot, so you didn't have to go searching through piles of paperwork around the house to find what you needed. A household [or family] binder will help relieve you of this stress, and is one of the greatest time-saving devices for getting through those more mundane tasks. Today I'm sharing the recent changes I made to ours, as well as 4 free binder printables to help get you started on your journey to organisation, and have a calmer approach to tackling household paperwork.

While organising definitely comes more naturally to some people than others, that doesn't mean it doesn't involve struggles and hard work. In fact, being able to recognise when something isn't working and taking the necessary steps to fix it, or working on changing a personal habit, is an important step in the whole organising game. Today I'm sharing my 6 biggest organisation struggles and how I've overcome them (or am still working on them!). Can you relate to any?
