My Simple Method for Organising Spices

My Simple Method for Organising Spices

On a recent poll in our Home Balance Facebook community, I asked group members which kitchen item they found most difficult to store and organise. And the resounding answer was the spice collection!

There are a few reasons why spices can be so difficult to store and organise...

  1. There are so many different types of spices that you may have in your collection within bottles, jars, and/or packets that you need to store
  2. Although you may tend to use the same few spices over and over again, there's also many that you will have bought for a specific meal or a particular occasion which then just sitting there taking up storage space
  3. Opened packets can spill, or the contents can go stale, if they're not sealed properly
  4. Spice jars or containers can take up quite a lot of storage space within a cabinet or drawer

5 practical ways to make cooking easier and more enjoyable

A question for you:

Do you enjoy cooking meals in your kitchen? If not, why not?

If you don't feel excited or motivated to cook meals, or you find the whole process stressful or frustrating, one big reason could be that your cooking zone is not set up in a way that makes it practical and simple for you to cook.

Because the cooking zone is where a lot of the action in a kitchen takes place, it needs to be organised in such a way that it's easy for you to prepare your ingredients, make the meal and clean up, without having to move things out of the way to get to the stovetop!

In this video, I'm detailing 5 practical ways to make the cooking process less stressful to you can save time and energy each night.

How to organise a laundry storage cupboard

How to organise a laundry storage cupboard

Who doesn't love a good sneak peek into other people's storage spaces?! I know that some of my most pinned Pinterest images are those that show sneaky storage solutions, or clever ideas for 'adding' space in a tight spot.

Luckily for us, in our new laundry, storage space is not an issue - with a huge cupboard, we have plenty of room for all the laundry essentials, plus some added extras from other rooms! In the last episode of The Organised You TV, I revealed the new laundry room that we created ourselves as part of our home renovation. And in the second part of this reveal, I'm showing you inside our laundry storage cupboard.

Revealed: a tour of our terrific new laundry room

I'm excited today to finally be giving you a tour of our new laundry room - it's been a long time coming! After we 'completed' our home renovation last year, we were left with 100s of little (and many not so little!) jobs to complete. One of those included the build of our entire laundry. A rather daunting task to say the least!

However, we'd been planning this new space for a long time, and knew exactly what we wanted - you may remember this post where I outlined my wish list of features and items I hoped to include. A detailed plan always makes any big project easier to dive into!

How to overcome your fear of throwing paperwork away {Q & A}

How to overcome your fear of throwing paperwork away {Q & A}

Do you have anxiety, worry or fear around which paperwork you should be holding onto, and which is safe to get rid of?

Does it make you feel stressed to go through your archival papers, or paper backlog, because you're not sure where to start in terms of throwing things out? Or how long you should be keeping certain documents?

One of the main reasons a lot of people don’t have their files organised is because they actually don’t know which papers they should be keeping, and for how long. Therefore, they hold onto everything 'just in case' they need to refer back to it, resulting in stuffed-to-the-brim filing cabinets, or completely disorganised systems.

5 Simple steps to creating a school memory box

5 Simple steps to creating a school memory box

I imagine all the mamas of school-aged kids would be nodding their heads in agreement when I say the amount of work that comes home from your child's school-life can be a little overwhelming! But it's also difficult to actually decide what to keep, and what to get rid of, when it comes to your child's wonderful creations.

When my 6 year old son (who has just started school this year) comes home with a new certificate, piece of writing, drawing, or painting, I feel incredibly proud of him, and he is so proud of himself. And that is something to be celebrated in life, right?! Which is why we have an art display in both our kids' rooms, and a cork-board for their certificates and awards.

However, I also knew that with each new keepsake that entered our home, I really needed to create some sort of streamlined system for sorting and storing it all. Something that would keep the paper piles at bay, while preserving the special memories, report cards, work, and achievements collected throughout the school years.

And that is how I decided that a School Memory Box was a must in our home! It's a system that I am already loving - both for the ease of setting it up, and maintaining it...  as long as you keep the word 'streamlined' in mind!
